There’s something about October that makes me want to light every candle I own, make a mug of something warm, and dive into a story that gives me just the right amount of chills. If you’re feeling the same, I’ve got you covered! Here are a few books I’ve read (or have on my nightstand) that are perfect for spooky season — no jump scares, just moody vibes, witchy women, and a few haunted houses for good measure.
Weyward by Emilia Hart
If you’re in the mood for something witchy but beautifully written, Weyward is such a good pick. It follows three women, generations apart, all connected by this quiet, wild magic tied to nature. It’s atmospheric and earthy and makes you want to wander through the woods collecting herbs (with a little guidebook, of course). I loved how it blended historical fiction and feminist storytelling — like Practical Magic meets The Crucible, but hopeful.
Cackle by Rachel Harrison
This is one of those books that feels like it was made for fall. Cackle follows Annie, who moves to a picturesque little town after a breakup and befriends a woman who might… possibly… be a witch. It’s cozy, funny, and a little spooky — like Gilmore Girls if Stars Hollow had cobwebs and potion bottles. I finished it wishing Sophie (the witchy friend) was real so we could hang out.

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
This one is for my horror-curious readers — the kind who say “I don’t usually do scary, but…” Hendrix somehow makes creepy dolls, family drama, and grief work together in a way that’s both hilarious and horrifying. I laughed out loud and got goosebumps, sometimes in the same chapter. Think Beetlejuice meets Hereditary, but somehow funny.
Play Nice by Rachel Harrison
Rachel Harrison strikes again! Play Nice is all about ambition, power, and what happens when women stop shrinking themselves to fit expectations. It’s dark, funny, and a little unhinged — in the best way possible. There’s a haunted house, a book within a book, and that signature Harrison blend of sharp humor and eerie tension.

The Haunting of Paynes Hollow by Kelly Armstrong
This book is currently on my nightstand in my TBR pile and was my most recent pick from Book of the Month. This spin on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow seemed like the perfect pick for spooky season. It’s a supernatural horror with family secrets, mystery, and a blend of mythology. I’m looking forward to picking up this thriller, which I’ve heard has shocking twists.
If you’re building your fall reading list, you can’t go wrong with any of these. They’ve got that mix of comfort and creepiness that makes October reading so good. So grab your blanket, your favorite drink, and settle in — spooky season’s here, and it’s the perfect time to get a little witchy.
