A Cozy Winter Escape to Ogunquit, Maine

January 20, 2026

There’s something magical about the Maine coast in winter. When the crowds disappear, the air turns crisp, and the ocean feels vast and untamed. Ogunquit, often known as a bustling summer destination, transforms into a peaceful seaside retreat once winter settles in.

Winter in Ogunquit moves at a slower pace, and that’s exactly the charm. Without the summer traffic and packed sidewalks, the village feels intimate and almost timeless. Snow dusted rooftops, empty beaches, and the sound of waves crashing against the shore create a sense of calm you just don’t get during peak season.

Where to Stay

After exploring, coming back to The Inn at Perkins Cove was one of the best parts of the day. The Inn’s classic New England decor set the tone right away. Timeless, warm, and inviting without feeling overdone. The innkeeper, Katie was friendly and attentive to any need we may have had. Throughout our stay you’d find her checking in guests, shoveling the walkways and giving recommendations for the area. She could also talk philosophy with Andrew, a topic he never shies away from. After a two night stay it truly felt like a home away from home.

Our room felt like a luxury winter retreat. Wide plank floors, French doors, vintage details and soft natural light gave the space an airy, coastal feel, even on gray winter days. The bed was extremely comfortable, the kind you look forward to sinking into after hours outside in the cold.

The bathroom was especially luxurious. The steam shower was perfect for warming up and detoxing from the day and the soaking tub made evenings feel indulgent. Winter has a way of making these details matter more, and having a space designed for comfort made the stay feel extra special.

Breakfast is included each day and is prepared at the restaurant next door, Perkins Cove Kitchen. There is also a coffee/tea bar which is very well stocked and a nightly sweet treat. They really think of everything.

The Inn at Perkin’s Cove is part of a collection of lodgings, OGT Inns , which are located throughout the village. If I were visiting in the summer months I would definitely look into the Nellie Littlefield Inn or Abalonia which are closer to the beach and also have pools on site.

Places To Eat

One of my favorite parts of traveling, especially in winter, is leaning into comfort food! While some seasonal restaurants close, the ones that stay open feel super welcoming. We popped into Cornerstone Artisanal Pizza & Craft Beer for a cozy lunch as the snow slowly fell outside. They have a great pizza selection. We ordered the Cherry Pepper, which had an herbed oil base, topped with goat cheese, caramelized onions, cherry peppers, pepperoni, and mozzarella. It was SO good! They also have a decent beer selection and fun seasonal cocktails. Pepper’s Landing hit the spot with classic Maine dishes that felt especially satisfying during this wintery stay. Sitting down to a warm seafood meal after braving the cold just hits differently. And of course Perkins Cove Kitchen is a must stop for classic meals and an inviting atmosphere. The restaurant was bustling each evening with both locals and guests to the area. They have a great cocktail list and a menu full of comfort food. The wild mushroom and shallot ravioli was SO flavorful!

Things To Do

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that Ogunquit closes up shop! There were plenty of shops to explore in the little downtown area, and we found many of them were having sales. This Is It has a great selection of woman’s clothing, many unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else. On the Main is full of reasonably priced art pieces that are sure to add some whimsy to your home. I’m a sucker for an old school candy shop. The Harbor Candy Shop is a mix of colorful Americana and classic European chocolatier. They produce fresh products daily, such as fruit jellies, fudge and truffles. H&M Crumpets is connected to the candy shop and has some really nice lotions and candles.

If shopping isn’t your thing and you’re craving more activity. You can cross country ski or snowshoe at the Wells Reserve or Mount Agamenticus. The Marginal Way trail is a great, scenic walk even in the winter months. Just make sure you have your boots and bundle up!

If you’re looking for a winter getaway that’s quiet, cozy, and still full of coastal charm, Ogunquit is such a good choice. The Inn at Perkins Cove was the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and soak up the quieter side of the Maine coast.

  1. What a wonderful story. Had the same exceptional experience from Inn Keeper Kate when we stayed at Moon over Maine this past summer.

    1. Moon Over Maine looks like a perfect place to spend the summer. I had no idea that she also took care of that property as well, she certainly stays busy!
