When Everyone Else Is Traveling for Break… and You’re Not

April 19, 2026

Open Instagram during school break or vacation week and it can feel like the entire world is traveling. Beach sunsets. Airport selfies. Passport stamps. Someone is always posting a café in Paris or a pool somewhere warm. And then there’s you… still at home.

Maybe the timing didn’t work. Maybe travel wasn’t in the budget this season. Maybe work schedules or family obligations kept you close to home. Whatever the reason, staying put while everyone else heads off can feel a little disappointing at first.

Here’s the thing though, a break doesn’t have to involve a plane ticket to be memorable. Some of my favorite resets have happened right at home. With a little intention, a stay put break can still feel meaningful, refreshing, and even worth sharing stories about later!

Here are a few ways to make the most of your staycation.

Treat Your Town Like a Travel Destination

Travel isn’t only about distance, it’s about perspective! Look at your own area the way a visitor might. What would someone visiting for the first time want to see, taste, or explore? Maybe it’s a long walk along the waterfront, trying a café you’ve never been to, or finally visiting that museum or market you always drive past.

Here in Maine, even a simple morning can feel like a small getaway. Coffee and croissant at a local shop, a walk by the harbor, and lunch somewhere new. That sounds like perfection to me. The goal is to break your normal routine, even if you’re only a few miles from home.

Plan a Day Trip Adventure

You don’t need a week away to have a change of scenery. Pick one or two days during the break and plan a mini adventure! Go somewhere within an hour or two of home that you don’t visit often.

Don’t over complicate it. It can be a simple trip to a coastal town, a scenic drive, a hiking trail or a small local market or farm stand. Bring a camera, grab lunch somewhere, and take your time the way you would on vacation. The mindset matters more than the distance.

Travel Through Food

One of the easiest ways to bring travel home is through cooking. Choose a country you’d love to visit and make a meal inspired by it. Play music from that place, light a candle, and turn dinner into a little cultural experience.

This is exactly why I started my Cooking Around the World series. Even when you’re not traveling, you can still explore flavors and traditions from somewhere new. For one evening, your kitchen becomes the destination.

Give Yourself One “Slow Morning”

Travel often feels special because the pace changes. So recreate that feeling at home. Pick one morning of your break and make it intentionally slow: Good coffee, a long breakfast, maybe a book or travel magazine at the table. Try not to doom scroll! Let the morning stretch out the way it does when you’re away somewhere new. Sometimes that shift in pace is exactly what we need.

Do Something You Never Have Time For

Breaks are a perfect opportunity to do something that normally gets pushed aside. Maybe it’s starting a new book or visiting a friend you haven’t seen in awhile. Organizing your travel photos into a fun scrapbook or trying a recipe you’ve been saving for a “special occasion”. I received an embroidery kit for Christmas that I’m going to attempt, it doesn’t have to be a big project.

Remember That Breaks Are About Resetting

Travel is wonderful, but the real purpose of a break is to pause and recharge. Sometimes staying home actually allows you to do that more fully. You sleep in your own bed. You move at your own pace. You spend time with familiar places and people. And when the break is over, you might realize something surprising. You didn’t miss out on the break at all, you just experienced it differently.

And those are still stories worth sharing later. 🙂
