Budget Friendly Date Ideas That Are Fun, Meaningful & Affordable

Advertisements

The other day I was watching the morning news after my walk and they were doing a piece on how expensive dating is these days. Did you know that the average date costs around $200! It’s wild how expensive things have gotten. It’s easy to fall into the idea that date night has to mean reservations at an expensive restaurant or tickets to the newest show. But some of my favorite memories have come from the simplest outings. That could look like a walk by the water, trying a new coffee shop, or cooking dinner together at home.

Whether you’re saving for a vacation, paying off debt, or simply trying to be more mindful with your spending, quality time doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.

Here are some of my favorite budget friendly date ideas that focus more on connection than cost.

Have a Sunset Picnic

Pack sandwiches, fruit, and your favorite snacks and head to a local park, beach, or scenic overlook. Bring a blanket, maybe a deck of cards and stay until the stars come out. Walking Portland’s Eastern Prom or The Green Belt down to Spring Point in South Portland are two great spots in my neck of the woods.

Cook a New Recipe Together

This is a favorite! Choose a country you’ve always wanted to visit and cook one of its traditional dishes together. It’s surprisingly fun, WAY less expensive than dining out and you may even have some leftovers.

Visit a Farmers Market

Walk through your local market local perusing fresh products and challenge yourselves to create dinner using only what you buy there. We love strolling through our local market Saturday mornings, there’s always so much to see.

Browse a Bookstore

Give each other a budget, think $10-$20, and pick out a book you think the other person would enjoy. Many book shops have a used book section which can make that money go a long way.

Take a Local Trail

Nature is one of the best free date spots. Pack water, snacks, and enjoy being unplugged together. In the winter you can snowshoe or ski the trails if you have the gear.

Watch the Sunrise

I’m a big sunrise girly. I love waking up early and taking my morning walk to catch the sunrise over the ocean. Andrew loves to join me to watch the sunrise, minus the walk. Wake up early, grab coffee, and find a quiet place to watch the day begin. It’s peaceful and surprisingly romantic.

Go for Happy Hour

Where we live there are always new restaurants opening that we want to try. A great way to try a new place while keeping it budget friendly is popping in for happy hour. Grab a drink at the bar and a snack to share. You get to sample what this restaurant has to offer and maybe you’ll come back to try the whole menu.

Visit the Beach

Even if it’s not swimming weather, beaches are wonderful places for long walks, shell hunting, or simply listening to the waves. Afternoon or early evening visits are great to avoid crowds.

Have a Board Game Night

Dust off old favorites or borrow games from friends. Add homemade pizza and you’ve got an inexpensive evening.

Grab a Flight at A Local Brewery

Support your local brewer and pop in for a flight to share. There are usually games to play or a band to listen to while you’re there. And you can always pick up some beer to bring home with you. I feel like it’s cheaper at the actual brewery.

Visit a Botanical Garden

Perfect if you enjoy photography! Many gardens offer discounted admission days or seasonal memberships. Even better, community centers and libraries often offer free passes to botanical gardens, I know my local library does. It’s worth asking about.

Attend Free Community Events

Many towns host:

These are often a very inexpensive way to have a date night and experience your community.

Quick Date Ideas

One of the nicest things about inexpensive dates is that they shift the focus away from spending money and back to spending time together. Some of the most memorable moments happen when there’s no schedule to keep and no pressure to make the evening “worth the cost.” A simple walk, a shared meal, or exploring somewhere new can lead to conversations and memories that last much longer than an expensive night out.

At the end of the day, it’s not about how much you spend, it’s about being present with the person you’re sharing the experience with. 🙂
